Wildland Habitat Ecology

“Habitat” has a long history as one of the core concepts in ecology, conservation biology, and natural resource management. Habitats chosen by individuals can influence fitness outcomes, and therefore demographic rates can be linked to habitat conditions. In this course, we explore considerations for the ecology and management of rangeland habitats. We will learn about fundamental ideas in wildlife habitat ecology using examples from rangeland systems found in the western U.S. This course will emphasize “active” learning for students, and will provide opportunities not only for students to listen, but also to talk, read, write, reflect upon, and apply course content. Student assessment will occur in various formats d will evaluate progress in learning the full range of content and skills required of successful natural resource professionals, including technical, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.
